Sullivan at 150 International Symposium

Description: The Chicago History Museum is hosting
a symposium on the life and career of the American architect,
Louis Sullivan on October 13-15, 2006. Supported by generous grants
from the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, the Brinson Foundation,
and the Illinois Arts Council, eight internationally recognized
scholars have been invited to the museum to consider the meaning
of Sullivan and his work on the 150th anniversary of his birth.
The eminent architectural historian, Jean Louis Cohen will deliver
a keynote address on Friday evening, October 13. The schedule
on Saturday, October 14 will feature presentations by Daniel Bluestone,
University of Virginia; Joseph Siry, Wesleyan University; Lauren
Weingarden, Florida State University; and Joanna Merwood-Salisbury,
Parsons School of Design. The schedule on Sunday, October 15 will
feature presentations by Jean Castex, Ecole Nationale Superieure
d'Architecture de Versailles; and Wim De Wit, Getty Research Institute.
Finally, David Van Zanten, Mary Jane Crowe Professor in Art and
Art History, Northwestern University will moderate a discussion
with all seven speakers on what Sullivan's buildings, designs,
methods, and ideas mean for us today.
The fee to attend the 3-day symposium is $90. The fee to attend
for any one day of the symposium is $45. Students with ID may
attend the symposium for a discounted rate of $40 for all three
days, or $20 for any one day. All presentations, including the
keynote address will be held at the Chicago History Museum, 1601

Tour - John Vinci Tours Charnley-Persky House
When: 1:00 p.m.
Where: Charnley-Persky House (use door at the south end of the building), 1365 N. Astor Street, Chicago
Description: Restoration architect John Vinci will give a rare insider's tour of Charnley-Persky House. Vinci, who has been a central figure in the historic preservation movement in Chicago, fought a long battle to save Sullivan's Chicago Stock Exchange building. It was Vinci who oversaw the careful removal of the building's Trading Room and its exacting reinstallation at The Art Institute of Chicago in the 1970s. During that time he also oversaw a major restoration of the James Charnley House which included reconstruction of the hallmark second floor balcony. Join architect John Vinci as he talks about his personal and professional links to Sullivan, an architect who continues to inspire in the 21st century.
